It’s been a while since I have wrote anything of any significance. I guess as you get older or you get more involved you just space it out half the time and don’t remember what you wanted to say in the first place. Much like when your looking for something and when you forget halfway through the search what your looking for.. Umm what was I in this room for? Fuck it lets take a nap. That’s old age setting in mind you and you should be fucking terrified. Soon you will be forgetting to go pee and you will just pee your pants all the time and don’t even get me started about remembering to put on pants.

With all that nonsense being said, its hard to remember the last time I really carted about my own birthday. I’ve had some great parties that I can’t remember for sure. Some pretty good times and just general drunken randomness. But it seems like they just keep getting faster and faster. Well this birthday I don’t really know what to do so I’m just rambling here on the blog that dawn setupnd keeps sweating that she will update. Sure dawn.. sure… haha. .

I guess lately I’ve just taken my photos to a new level. I’m letting that do the talking so technically I’ve wrote something like 60 thousand words. I mean it feels like that, I have become a way way better photographer, since I moved to new orleans. I have started exploring taking photos of people something way way way harder than shooting anything else. Like buildings, or anything else really. Making people look good and capturing real moments has fascinated me since I started shooting. I just didn’t have the balls to do it until now or maybe it was something else. Who knows.

This new camera has helped a lot. Without a 10 pound weight strapped to me it seems like I’m way way more free to get close and be part of the photo. Call it gonzo photography if you will. But some of these photos I’m like a foot away from people at most. So its really fun to get the courage up and just dive right in. Be part of the story, thats why I always admired Hunter S. Thompson’s writing he made himself part of the thing. Part of it, and most of the time he was THE story.

I like that aspect of photo’s you can and want to get in there, thats where the good photos are. Right in the middle of it all. Dive in, live life and just let it come as it may. Sure you may take a couple bad looks dirty dirty looks sometimes, What good is life without a little conflict or danger. Sometimes you have to scare yourself a little to see what your made of.

Well on this day of my birth I want to thank Dawn for supporting my craziness since we moved to NOLA. I love you the most and you are my muse, even if you don’t want to believe it.

Have a great day everyone.

  1. I love your writing like I love your photography….Like you said….you like to get right in there….And you do it so well! When we roam about it is such entertainment to see you move in & out, positioning for a shot you are about to take….. still smiling that certain Eli smile…. still just hanging out, taking in what ever else is going on too. So cool….

I must say what I’ve said before….You have such an eye, for catching the energy & movement…..the soul that lies behind whatever “still” moment you catch.

I have spent time with photography books throughout my life. You know I can’t, won’t, don’t care to, put much effort there and do not have that eye,myself….. But I have always appreciated the art form…..Like with some of those favorite books, I return again and again to the photos you have taken, as much for the light, the framing, the feeling you catch, as for the history, personal and otherwise that you document.

And the part about Dawn being your muse…….It could not be any more clear…..

  2. Thanks Caroline, I recently came a cross a quote that sum up exactly what I try and do.

Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like. – David Alan Harvey
