While I have no way of knowing if there would be an NHSC-approved FNP job when the time comes, this little town in southwest Colorado seems interesting.

Colorado is good because that’s where Raf and Kim live (in Boulder), where Holly and Dennis will be living in about 6 months (Denver area), and is in the region of Travis and Rachel Brown (SLC). It looks like a beautiful area, high and dry, mountainous with a river and hot spring. It sits in a little valley at 6,512 feet elevation, getting lots of snow in winter, with several ski mountains around, but sunny & dry most of the year.  There seems to be a vital little downtown with restaurants and shops and a fair amount of art/music for the size of community.  It hosts a music festival in the summer and is the home of mountain biking. Rent seems fairly reasonable at maybe around $900-$1200 for a nice 2 bedroom apt, townhouse, or cabin/house in or out of town.

So, for us that would mean we could have a decent home, still eat good and catch a band or a movie now and then, and have awesome camping, mountain biking, and hiking. I’d probably like to check out some snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and kayaking too.

Durango is gorgeous. I was there last winter during my Colorado tour with the dogs. In the Winter you get some of the best Snowboarding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling you can get in CO. During the summer you get awesome hiking, biking and festivals. My favorite thing about Durango though had to be the night skies. There is also a good amount of money in Durango. Which might help for Eli finding private consulting work. The BEER is AWESOME!

Which brings me to the Cons. You are far away from everything that isn’t Durango. This means, not a big variety of food, movies and bands that you might want to see arent playing there and not many people around. Also, you better like snow, cause it is snowy for a long time during the year. It’s cold, not like NYC bitter awful cold, but cold in the winter.

If you are looking to move somewhere for a year or 2, Durango would be an awesome experience. Plus, its a 6 hour drive for us to see you, which beats the drive to Hawaii 🙂

  2. We drove up the northwest end of New Mexico through the Navajo Nation to Durango when we went to New Mexico in August. Raf, you are right, it is reeeaaaaaally far from everything. It was actually Eli’s favorite place we visited and 2nd after Santa Fe for me. It’s geographically a gem in a tight valley among steep mountains with a river through the middle of town. The bike paths everywhere, walkability, housing within the downtown, pretty downtown, and restaurant/bar scene really appealed to me. But it was August and I was wearing long sleeves and sweatshirts in the evenings. That part is cool, but there may not be enough warm clothes in the world to keep me warm through a Durango winter. It sounds like the winters are really long there. I can’t go for that. Noooo. No can do.
