Last day in Hanoi – Day 4

We walked past the lady selling egg sandwiches on the corner just about everyday. Today we stopped and now I know where to get the best egg sandwich / banh mi anywhere. The last day anywhere is a mixture of excitement to see more and sadness that we are leaving.
Small temple
We ate lunch at another place passed daily on our way somewhere less impressive. It takes spending a couple days in a place to see what’s right under your nose. Amazing pho, and some other beef noodle bowl of goodness was ours for the taking. We walked to the park ate mangos, watched children play, and brides take photos. We chatted with a man on the sidewalk about where we were from and where he lived before hanoi. People are social here.

The preparations for the tet are in full force. Every park is being planted with bright flowers. The public spaces are being lit festively. Signs are going up structures built and people seem generally excited.

traffic
Hanoi you captured our imagination, our heart, and our smiles. The stream of sound I’ll miss the hum of scooters beeping and zipping through the night. The street food, small shops, the cafe life is a life I want now. The social experience of a mobile culture not hindered by traffic laws and seemingly not hindered by the laws of physics is something to behold. We will miss you.

We leave on a train tonight to Dong Hoi overnight in a sleeper car shared with another two people. From there to phong nha for some hiking cave tour’s and to unwind on the way to HUE.
Dawn is sickly
HUE is one of my bucket list items. I won’t be taking any photos of the caves since its a we’re going to get wet and swim in our clothes kinda tour.
Small shrine dawn center So depending on my mood I may or may not post anything for a couple days.

  1. Your Ode to Hanoi on her having “capturied your imagination”, and obviously, a piece of your hearts, is beautiful.

And the statement about being somewhere for days and missing what is right under your nose is why my personal rule for travel is never fly anywhere you can’t stay for at least 2 weeks. More is, of course, is always better.

That you & Dawn read much before you went must have given you a base overview of the culture & history. But i know you feel this too….that nothing replaces….the smells, the sounds….the visual of the people about the doings of their day. You both have such traveling spirits and insatiable curiosity. I am happy for you…..Happy you took this time for yourselves, …time to see deeper….to feel the people….to stumble into the best Beef Noodle. ….and most of all time to do it all together .

May good fortune smile on your continuing travels.

PS I have not been wearing shoes in the house and have still been sick, so moving slowly.. This makes Monkey more docile than usual. And when she plays with the rug or whatever she’s pretty cute. Then there is sweet Hammy. So lovey dovey! And though I am comforted when she lays on me I am also reminded what a big girl she is!
The fruit & soup you left got me through the worst Perfect! And Bob took me shopping, you know where, yesterday. As always he is a superb neighbor & friend. xoxo

  2. PS. Talk about curious. What is the mask on Dawn’s face?

  3. Everyone wears these masks here when on scooters because of the thick exhaust and dust. Sometimes people just wear when walking around in the city because the pollution is really rough. That’s what I was doing when the pollution was burning my airways.

  7. Thanks for reading and leaving feedback. I pretty much only check this website. I link articles on FB but it’s too much of a waste of time. This lets my mind stay here and me be present. I love that you enjoy it. These are also just my iPhone photos. So the rest will come later.
