Day 16 Vietnam
Phu Quoc is a little island off the south eastern tip of Vietnam. Geckos and frogs seem to love it here. Our hotel is really nice again. We have been lucking out. The walk back to our room is quite stunning and now dawn and I have some ideas for when we buy a house.
Our bed has nice linen and we have a little sitting area outside our door. We ride north to find a untouched beach. Dawn as the navigator me as the operator seems to work out well for both of us. I’m quite comfortable in the homicidal traffic. We seek the untouched areas. We get some recommendations by locals and head out.
We ride north towards the tip of the island. The road vanishes and we are on a bamboo bridge. Then a dirt road. Red clay and sand makeup the road. It’s filled with potholes and sand traps. It’s dry just inland from the beach. The road opens up to a stunning beach we get out for a swim.
Nobody is here. It almost doesn’t make sense. We’re on a beautiful beach all by ourselves. The nearest people tiny dots in the bay north of us. A few locals pull in and make offerings to the small shrine. The shrine faces out towards the bay. We snorkel a little and head further up the road.
We arrive at a small resort. Resort a loose term as this would be considered a hotel/motel in the USA. We ordered fresh spring roles and soda chan (Soda water with lemon and sugar). We sit watching other people take it easy in the sand under the coconut and beautifully leafy trees.
We continue going north, stopping at a couple more of the harder to get to resorts the road basically a dirt mess. Across the top of the island is massive development and the road turns to tricky sand pits. The sand looks like it’s solid and then you sink. I manage to get us through all of it except one small part we see another traveler straddling his xe may and running up the slight hill. Dawn has to walk but other than that 30 foot stretch I handle it like a champ.
We hit the main road paved and throttle back to town so we can enjoy the sunset. Dawn is a great navigator and my driving improves everyday. I’m starting to get the feel of it. The scooter and I have an understanding. I’ll try not to kill it if it tries not to kill me.
Dawn and I watch the sunset back at the moon resort. We head back to our hotel to change and walk across the street and eat.
